We’re proud to say that Donington Estate is Climate-positive – an independent audit confirms that we capture more carbon than we produce.
Looking after our land and resources isn’t a recent shift for us – it’s something we’ve focused on for decades. From woodland management to renewable energy, we’re always looking for ways to care for the environment, land and wildlife around us.
Around the Estate, we have 5 roof-mounted PV solar arrays, dwarfed since 2025 by a huge 140kWp array, hidden at the back of the site.
Approximately 40% of our electricity comes from our PV solar panels, and on a sunny day we produce more electricity than we use, exporting what’s left to the grid.
Since 2024 any electricity we need to buy to bridge the gap comes from Renewable Energy Guarantees of Origin (REFO) certified 100% renewable British sources.
We use EVs within our own small fleet, and we have 3 EV charging units available to customers for a small fee.
Our Deer Park is home to around 300 truly wild deer, left to roam with minimal human intervention. The park is protected as a Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to the rare insects that live in the trees and the ancient soils.
The park’s grassland is a permanent pasture, never once tilled or farmed, and as such, it contains ancient grasses and incredible biodiversity.
The whole park is kept free from chemicals and fertilisers, helping maintain a healthy habitat for the deer and our ancient oak trees.
We grow new Oaks from our own acorns and work with Natural England to actively support the Park’s biodiversity. We plant only native species that would have historically been part of the landscape.
We’ve planted tens of thousands of trees over the past 20 years to sustain and improve our 150 acres of woodland. Managed through a long-term plan with the Forestry Commission, these woodlands supply the wood fuel for our district heating system, which provides heating and hot water to the entire Venue and Hotel. By switching to wood fuel, we’ve been able to replace nine old oil and gas boilers.
In 2010, we upgraded our water systems, replacing six old septic tanks with a single, more efficient system. We also built our own independent sewage treatment system, utilising three reed beds that naturally filter the hotel’s wastewater.
As a bonus, these reed beds have become a haven for wildlife while helping us return clean water to the local stream.
Caring for the environment is part of everything we do, and we’ll keep finding new ways to improve.
